Works-For-Me Wednesday: Toy Storage

This is a running series of posts and this week HCTS is participating!

As you may recall, a few weeks ago I blogged about inventory storage but I focused on clothing.  Today I’ll show you how I store my toys and other boxed items.

These heavy duty metal shelves on wheels are not cheap, but they are worth their weight in gold when it comes to bang for your buck.  They have really maximized my useable space, because they give me reachable heighth and depth, yet can be stored very compactly because they are on wheels.

These were purchased at Sam’s Club for around $80 (if you find a better deal, please let me know!).  As I said, they aren’t cheap, but they DO make a huge difference.  And as a licensed business, they are a tax deductible business expense – always a bonus!

That’s what Works For Me!  If you have a different (or better!) storage solution I’d love to hear about it!

FLYers, today we maintain and start to explore Big Tent.

Happy Hump Day!

  1. I’m assuming from the photo that you box all of your toys prior to shipping. I like that idea! Thank you for sharing!!

  2. I have been so tempted to buy those shelves at Costco but now seeing it in use I may have to go take some measurements and see if my bins will fit.
Right now all my bins are stacked 3 high (on top of each other) and it is a pain if I have to get something out of the bottom bin.
    Thanks for the info!

  3. You mentioned reachable shelves. Here is something I do to use my NON-reachable space.

I have a walk-in closet in my master bedroom with a fairly high shelf along two walls. The ceiling is 2-4 feet above the shelf (under the slope of the roof). I can just reach the shelf, but cannot really reach any thing put onto it. So, Id never used it for any of my own clothing or shoes, etc.

Now, it houses much of my toy inventory. I like having the toys where my daughter cannot get into them! In some spots, I have a riser shelf. In other spots, I have boxes w/flaps tucked in, opening out… making a 2nd “shelf” (items inside the box as well as on top of it).

The key is, I KEEP a little chair in the closet. Its from a kids table and chair set which my dd no longer uses. Its small and light, so it takes almost no floor space in the closet, and its easy to move where I need it.

Whenever I need to grab a toy, I just step up onto the chair, with almost no more effort than if the shelves were a reachable height.

Ive found a key to storage is figuring out a way to make the available space useable, even if it didnt initially apear to be useable space.

  4. The actual shelf heights are all adjustable, so you can customize them however you’d like!

  5. I try to, as much as possible at least. It definitely helps!
