Here Comes The Stork Blog

What’s most important?

I’m compiling a list of 20 things that I will use when I critique the listings that are selected for this blog next week.  I’m wondering-what’s most important to you when you are listing?

Some things are no-brainers, like proper category placement and keywords. But do you ever ask yourself, “Which is more important-good pictures or a well written description?”

What’s most important to you? When deciding that, are you approaching that question as a buyer or a seller? Comments, please.

xoxo,

Rebecca

  1. Well, a picture speaks 1000 words if it’s a good one which makes the description a little less needed unless there are flaws with the item. I’d rather have a good picture and a short description than a bad picture and an entire page of description!

  2. I agree with you 100% Jennifer!! I am a very visual person, and need a good picture to “convince me to bid”.
I think in clothing, it’s VERY important to include measurements. It’s a time-sucker to do it initially, but if you are parking things in your store mostly (like me) or want to avoid too many ASQ or returns-it’s time well spent.

  3. I agree. Good pictures are definitely a must IMO.

When selling used items, a description is more opinion than anything, so pictures help clear things up.

  4. Description of items are very subjective and it is hard to know what is great or excellent to each individual but a picture pretty much tells you what you need to know. On the other hand there are a lot of good photo editing programs out there so it is best to check both.

  5. Keywords,
    Keywords,
    Keywords.

What I keep in mind is the Best Match algorithm. If they can’t find it, they can’t buy it.

Next is capturing the impulse buy/bid. GIVE the information – STATE the combined shipping formula (whenever possible), include clear photos, with close-ups of important details.

  6. Pictures Pictures Pictures. and of course, mention of any flaws, snags, holes etc. :)

  7. Pictures, definitely! As a buyer, if I can’t see the item(s) clearly in the pictures, I move on to the next listing. You need a great picture of the front, the back and anything else that draws attention to the piece – embellishments and such. Also, i really like it when a picture of any flaws are included. If there’s a spot somewhere, PLEASE put a picture of it!!

  8. I think pictures are important but since everyones computer monitor shows things differently (color / fading / etc) – I have to say an accurate assessment of the condition of the item. But, as a caveat, it is important to keep the descriptions accurate and SHORT!

  9. Pics- good background with no clutter or gross stained carpet, etc. That is such a turnoff and I will move on.

Descriptions-clear and to the point with all flaws noted. I can’t stand reading paragraphs of run on sentences. Smaller paragraphs or simple descriptions is so much easier and quicker to read.

  10. For me a picture is worth a 1000 words!

  11. A photo catches your eye, but a title and description can make or break a sale. A majority of buyers search by keyword–they do not browse categories for stuff that “looks” good.

I listed something with a photo that was blurry, only I didn’t realize that when I shot it. Yet it was my title that made someone find the item and buy it now in less than a week. And my price wasn’t the cheapest on eBay either. I just had the keywords she searched for, and my description confirmed it was exactly what she was looking for.

  12. For me pictures and a short description are important. If the picture doesn’t show me the details I move on, specially on clothing

  13. Well……..I’d say it’s like a good picture book. The pictures are important to help tell the story. I think the description is important, but only needs to be short and concise…….Often the picture is what captures the buyer to take a look…….

  14. I don’t think you can sell well unless you have both. Often I pass on items that look fine, but the the description is so short that it seems almost as if the buyer is leaving some important things out on purpose, which makes me suspicious :)

  15. I think pictures WITH good descriptions are very important since you can’t be there to hold the item in your hands. To see clear pictures of the actual item is a must–not stock photo’s. But, I believe a clear description needs to be there as well to give details you can’t see in the picture. We don’t need to know the history, just the details. I think the perfect listing has great keywords, clear pictures, and an accurate description.

  16. I’m big on pictures. I don’t take a lot of time to read through descriptions.

  17. I find that Pictures seal the deal, but a good detailed description (not wordy) also goes along way. What is worse than one photo and a poor description. I also look for Promotions such as Free Shipping, Quick Ship. The Free ship is nice because it is visual logo and searchable.

  18. This is a hard one because I think both are so important to get that sale. The title description is what brings the buyer to the listing. Once the title description hooks the buyer the picture better look awesome otherwise the the buyer might get turned off with the product. As a buyer I have had those feeling while I shop on Ebay.

  19. Definitely a good photo is the most important to me, but also I look for reasonable shipping costs. Accurate or calculated shipping costs that are reasonable are super important to me, especially since I’m in Canada where the shipping cost can really impact the total purchase price of an item.
Also definitely some mention of the condition of an item. If it’s new, then great – short and sweet, but if it’s used I want to know as much as the seller can tell me about stains, tears, wear etc…
