Listing of the day 5/19/09
Today’s listing of the day is…
Smocked Dress
I chose this listing because of the worthy cause you are trying to help in your listings. I’d like to help you edit your listings, to get them SOLD! I noticed you have a lot of these dresses listed with similar issues, so hopefully this critique will help you get them all going.
First of all, your title needs help dear. You have:
SMOCKED DRESS – SZ 8 NWOT 8 YEARS 8T 8 hcts
The first issue I see is that you have 8 in there twice, and 8T as well. The “T” means toddler size, and there is no 8T made by any manufacturer as far as I am aware. I would also eliminate the word years. Here’s what my title would be:
Girl clothes SMOCKED BLUE DRESS church jumper 8 new HCTS
And I am sure our commenters can come up with good options for your title, too. But please please please fix your titles in all your listings right away, okay? We’ve all made these same mistakes. Getting them corrected will help you see a jump in your sales, I am sure.
Okay, next is pictures. If I were you, I’d take all the dresses you are selling outside and use a mannequin, a form, or even just a hanger and display them each in your yard/garden. Then, I’d take full length pictures of the dress, front and back, and a good close up of the smocking. If you need help with editing them and creating a good gallery picture, please just ask us for help in the HCTS forum!!
Your description is pretty good. I love that you included the measurements. There are several phrases that kind of make me uneasy as a potential buyer. I’d immediately remove:
“Customers have reacted differently to the size of the dress. Some tell me it sizes small, others that it sizes big”.
Just say that the measurements are listed here for a perfect fit and that you are happy to take returns if there are any problems at all. Much more positive, see? You also need to tell just about that specific dress first in your listing. I REALLY appreciate your mission of helping women overseas-it makes me want to buy from you….but if I can’t uncover what I am bidding on, it makes it hard for me to take the plunge and bid. Also, your details are outdated in your description. Just say something like, “I have nearly 2000 positive feedback” or something like that.
You should also have a About Me page-it will be invaluable to you in telling your story and mission…and it can create $$ for you by putting your HCTS link on it.
I hope you find this helpful. We are all here to help you improve your listings, get them sold in the shortest amount of time and make the most money!
xoxo,
Rebecca

I agree with Rebecca’s comments. The first thing I noticed was the title, needs a little work like she said. And I think the pictures outside or full length would show how beautiful the dress is. Needs maybe a little more light.
I think your cause is so great and agree also it needs to be explained on the about me page.
I do love the measurements but wouldn’t say anything about some people think it runs small or big.
Let us know if you decide to change the listing and maybe show us the ‘new’ version.
Hello. Neat thing you are doing.
As for the title… A bunch of your dresses are near the top of the best match sort order for “Smocked dress 8″ – so thats good. Still, you could likely attract other shoppers by using different words in some of your titles, so you capture people who are not specifically looking for a smocked dress… but might like one if they see it.
I suggest including the color, and using New rather than NWOT. Rebecca’s suggested title has good words in it also. Since you have so many similiar items, you can try out different words in different titles. (But, I do not feel the word Jumper applies)
For the pictures – the lighting looks great on my screen. I like the white background. As a shopper, I would like to see the full length of the dress. I, myself, would not be willing to purchase without seeing a view of the entire dress. I’d also like to see a photo of the back, but that isnt as important to me as is seeing the “full view”.
On the measurements…. I agree with Rebecca that I would take out the part about “some think its small, some think its large” (which seems to indicate it is accurate!). I sugest you consider changing “measure your daughter” to “measure a similiar dress which fits your child well”. Clothing doesnt fit a body with the same chest measurement (for example) as the garment. There needs to be “ease”, or else it would be skin tight. People will have better results if they compare the measurements to similiar clothing they own.
Best of luck! I hope the dresses are selling well for you. They certainly are tempting!

Hi. I agree with what the above posters have mentioned. Title is so important because that is like the “door” to your listing. Without great keywords, some may not find it.
I think a full length view of the dress would help alot. I like that you put measurements but I would actually put all the item specifics up towards the top and your mission after the description of the dress. That way the buyer doesn’t really need to hunt for information.
Unfortunately, many buyers don’t read and they might just see size 8 and bid, and the measurements might not fit their child.
I wish you the best of luck on your listings!!
HI there! I agree with the above – most importantly the title (I don’t think “jumper” applies either, JMO) and the pictures. A full length picture is extremely important.
In my defense…I personally think Jumper is a good term because it’s also searchable overseas as a sweater. :sticks tongue out at everyone:
Just kidding girls, I appreciate your opinions and I think my brain must be slightly Euro-fied from drolling over my Boden catalogues.
See, I even can’t spell catalogue the AMERICAN way!!
